The Election

I'm not at all interested in politics, so the upcoming General Election has barely registered in my conciousness. With one notable exception. The National Party's campaign ads are so fucking funny! Heres what it says on their site...

National’s ‘Taxathon’ ad a new take on old jingle

The National Party has begun its television advertising with a ‘Taxathon’ ad.

The Taxathon ad is a humorous animation based on the old ‘Telethon’ jingle, with the chorus adjusted to “thank you very much for your high taxation”.

The ad labels Michael Cullen the ‘Wastemaster-General’ and Helen Clark the ‘Prime Moneywaster’. It also features David-Benson Pope’s ‘tennis ball’ incident, George Hawkins, and a conga line of Ministers including John Tamihere – complete with foot in mouth, Dover Samuels, Marian Hobbs and Ruth Dyson.

The ad builds on the Party’s Taxathon brochure which was distributed to homes nationwide last week.

Campaign Manager Steven Joyce says the ad is a fresh approach to political broadcasting.

“It uses humour and animation to highlight Labour’s high tax, high waste Government. It’s already generated a lot positive feedback, so is clearly doing its job,” Steven Joyce says.

The ad will run in conjunction with a more serious ad featuring National’s Leader Don Brash highlighting the importance of providing the right incentives in the tax system to enable people to get ahead.

Both ads can be viewed at http://www.nationaltv.org.nz/
