Shock...

I've just got back from the final meeting of the season at Baypark Speedway. I'm in kind of shock at the moment. There was a total of 9 roll overs during that meeting. Normally there's 2-3. I know its the end of the season, so drivers are more confident of their driving abilities and not so worried about not damaging their cars.

There were 2 dramatic roll overs. The first one happened right in front of us. A saloon car hit the wall, ripped off half of the fence and rolled over several times before bursting into fire. Racing was called off for 15 minutes while they tended to the guy, clear the debree and patched the fence. The guy did well to only suffer a broken leg.

The second one was much more serious. Baypark Speedways 'Golden Boy' 17 year old Ben Finemore go clipped by another car, went into the fence and rolled several times. Racing was stopped and an ambulance was brought onto the field. It took them at least half an hour to remove him from the car.

Apparently a piece of metal from his car's wing pierced his helmet and is embedded in his head. He's in critical condition.

Ben competed in Mini Stocks up until he turned 16, then last season he made the unusual move straight to Sprint Cars. Most young drivers do a season or two in Stock cars or Limited saloons before moving to Sprint Cars. Because of his age he was only allowed to compete at Baypark Track. Last season the New Zealand National Championships for Sprint Cars were held at Baypark. Ben won it. His first season driving Sprint Cars. Driving the oldest car in the field.

His car has been impounded by Speedway New Zealand so they can do a full investigation into the crash.

My prayers are with Ben and his family tonite.
