Play money anyone?

On 31 July 2006, smaller and lighter 10, 20, and 50 cent coins were introduced into circulation. The new coins have retained the same designs, but the new 10 cent coin is copper-coloured, and the 20 cent coin has a distinctive edging. The $1 and $2 coins are unchanged.

There is a transition period from 31 July 2006 to 31 October 2006. During this period the old and the new coins can be used. From 1 November 2006, the old 10, 20, 50 and 5 cent coins, will no longer be legal tender. This means that retailers do not have to accept them for payment of goods. But the old coins will always be redeemed by the Reserve Bank in Wellington.

The new coins are tiny, and feel like plastic. Almost like play money.
